Man Killed After Assaulting a suspect’s Grandmother in NC, according to authorities, in what they believe was a retaliation shooting.
A man who had just finished serving a federal sentence earlier this year is now back behind bars, accused of killing a man in what authorities are calling “retaliation.”
According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, 36-year-old Marcus Antwan Wiley was arrested Thursday, October 9, 2025, by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team.
Investigators say the shooting happened around 2:00 a.m., October 2, in Wilson County, leaving 37-year-old Brandon Mandrell Murphy dead.
Deputies located Murphy’s body on Main Street, between Parker and Anderson streets.
A fight broke out between the two men before the shooting.
The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office says they believe the shooting was in direct retaliation for an assault on Wiley’s grandmother in 2024, that allegedly occurred while Wiley was serving time in federal custody.
Wiley was released from federal custody on April 15
“We believe that the shooting occurred in retaliation of that assault,” said Wanda Samuels, Wilson Co. Sheriff’s Office Chief of Staff stated.
Following the deadly shooting, Wiley fled Wilson County. Law enforcement tracked him down at a residence on Barry Lane in Jacksonville, where SWAT took him into custody without incident.
Wiley has been charged with first-degree murder.
The investigation is still ongoing, and more arrests are expected, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office said.
Wiley is expected to make a first court appearance tomorrow.
