POLICE CHIEF: “I’M FRUSTRATED… THIS WAS SENSELESS”
Winston-Salem Police Chief William H. Penn, Jr. didn’t sugarcoat anything during the press conference — standing alongside Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough and District Attorney Jim O’Neill.
“I’m frustrated. I’m angry. I’m sad. This didn’t have to happen. This was senseless.”

Police chief said “This was senseless.” Please explain. We know it was tragic, but if you are saying it was senseless then you must understand everything about the back story. Doesn’t the public deserve to know what happened and why?
It is clear that many officers are closing ranks, even against individuals actively seeking help. I have been assaulted multiple times by the same individual; the second attack resulted in severe, permanent damage and serious bodily injuries. Despite an officer arriving at the scene while I was actively bleeding from a head wound, the department failed to conduct a proper investigation.
Even after visiting the magistrate’s office, I have been unable to secure the accountability I deserve. Proper policing is a necessity. As an independent contractor and a resident of this city, I am now forced to move constantly to seek refuge because of death threats I received prior to the second assault—threats that only emboldened the attacker. I am sharing this to highlight the lack of protection and the urgent need for reform.
