Lake Norman teacher accused of assaulting student during wrestling practice

MOORESVILLE, NC — A Lake Norman High School teacher and wrestling coach is facing criminal charges after a student reported being assaulted during team practice, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the suspect as 36-year-old Stephen William Boyle, who had been listed as an English teacher at Lake Norman High School—until his photo mysteriously disappeared from the school’s website this week.

Stephen William Boyle, a 36-year-old Lake Norman High School English teacher and wrestling coach, is accused of repeatedly striking a student during practice, resulting in concussion symptoms. Boyle was charged with misdemeanor assault and child abuse and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.

WHAT WENT DOWN INSIDE THAT PRACTICE ROOM

The alleged assault happened Friday, November 21, at the school’s wrestling practice on Doolie Road in Mooresville.

Sheriff Darren Campbell said deputies were contacted the next day, November 22, by medical staff at Novant Health Medical Center in Huntersville after a student came in with injuries that doctors believed came from an assault.

When deputies arrived, they learned the injured teen was a student wrestler who said the incident happened during practice—and that the person responsible wasn’t another student, but an adult coach: Boyle.

According to the student, a fight had already broken out between him and another wrestler. When Boyle stepped in, instead of breaking it up safely, the student claims Boyle intentionally struck him in the head multiple times with his hand.

Detectives interviewed witnesses who confirmed there was a fight between two students, and that Boyle allegedly hit the student “multiple times in the head” while breaking it up.

DOCTORS SAY THE STUDENT HAD CONCUSSION SYMPTOMS

The next day, the student reportedly still wasn’t feeling right and was taken to the ER. Medical staff said his symptoms were consistent with a concussion.

That’s when police became involved.

After investigating, deputies secured warrants for:

  • Misdemeanor Simple Assault

  • Misdemeanor Child Abuse

Boyle was arrested Monday, November 24, but he was released just as quickly on a $10,000 unsecured bond, meaning he didn’t have to pay anything up front.

The Iredell-Statesville School District confirmed that Boyle has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

He is expected to appear in court in early February.

The case remains under investigation.
