Irresponsible Mother Arrested After Shooting Her 4-Year-Old Daughter in Durham

Vintasia Sowell arrested for shooting daughter

24-year-old Vintasia Sowell was arrested on Saturday, January 4, after Durham police say she shot her 4-year-old daughter with a .223 rifle. While it’s unclear if the shooting was accidental or intentional, one thing is certain – Sowell’s actions were irresponsible and neglectful.

At approximately 1:47 p.m., police responded to a shooting call in the 3000 block of East Weaver Street near East Cornwallis Road. Upon arrival, they found the young girl suffering from a gunshot wound. The child was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries.

According to arrest warrants obtained by The North Carolina Beat, the shooting caused severe damage to the child’s internal organs, including her spleen, liver, kidney, and stomach.

Sowell was arrested and charged with felony child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon. She was granted a $50,000 bond and bonded out shortly thereafter. She appeared in court on Monday, January 6.

The investigation is ongoing.
