Federal Government Officially Shuts Down After Funding Bills Fail

Government Shutdown

U.S. Government Shutdown Now in Effect

The federal government has officially shut down tonight after both the Republican-led and Democrat-backed stopgap funding bills failed to pass in the Senate, throwing the nation into a political and operational crisis.

The Senate’s Republican-crafted stopgap measure was rejected 55–45, falling short of the 60-vote threshold required to overcome a filibuster. Meanwhile, a Democratic alternative also failed, leaving no viable legislation in place to keep the government open.

The White House’s Office of Management and Budget instructed all federal agencies earlier today to activate their shutdown contingency plans.

Up to 750,000 federal workers are now facing furloughs, including more than 11,000 employees at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and approximately 41% of the Department of Health and Human Services workforce, which equates to around 32,460 people.

Agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will also be heavily impacted, with 64% of CDC employees and 75% of NIH staff expected to be furloughed.

While air traffic control, border security, military operations, and some law enforcement remain active, workers will NOT be paid during the shutdown.
