Fayetteville Man Charged With Murder After 8-Month-Old Baby Dies From Traumatic Brain Injury

A Fayetteville man has been charged with murder in connection to the heartbreaking death of an 8-month-old baby who suffered a traumatic brain injury earlier this month.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 21-year-old Darrell Lamar Evans Jr. is facing charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse after the infant passed away on May 9, just one day after being rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Darrell Lamar Evans Jr., a 21-year-old Fayetteville man charged with murder, was arrested after authorities determined he was caring for an infant who later died from a traumatic brain injury.

Deputies responded to the hospital on the evening of May 8 after medical staff reported the child’s devastating injury. Following the infant’s death, the North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and ruled the case a homicide.

Through their investigation, authorities identified Evans as the person caring for the infant at the time of the injury. He was arrested on May 20 and is currently being held without bond in the Cumberland County Detention Center. 

At this time, officials have not revealed Evans’ relationship to the child. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate and urges anyone with relevant information to come forward.
