Two Teens Shot During Edgecombe County HS Football Shooting in Pinetops, NC
A high school football game in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, turned into a crime scene Friday night after gunshots rang out in the middle of the third quarter, leaving two teenagers shot and an entire stadium running for safety.
The incident happened during a rivalry game between Tarboro High School and Southwest Edgecombe High School at a packed stadium in Pinetops.
With just 1:58 left in the third quarter, the sound of gunfire interrupted the cheers, forcing players, coaches, and fans to evacuate in panic.
What We Know So Far
Authorities say a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old female were both struck by gunfire during the chaos. Thankfully, both are in stable condition, and medical staff report that their prognosis is good.
Edgecombe County deputies and EMS responded quickly, tending to the victims and securing the scene.
Despite having metal detectors and a weapons detection system in place, somehow a firearm still made its way past security and into the stadium.
Sheriff’s deputies confirmed that one person of interest is currently in custody, but officials have not said whether this was a targeted attack, random act of violence, or if multiple shooters could be involved.
The motive remains under investigation.
