Eastern Correctional Institution lockdown
A lockdown remains in effect at Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury, North Carolina news, following a hazardous materials incident that sent one inmate and three staff members to the hospital. It happened on Saturday, March 29, when staff members discovered an inmate showing signs of intoxication from an unknown substance. After engaging with the inmate, three staff members began experiencing difficulty breathing and required immediate medical attention.
All individuals affected were treated and have since been released from the hospital. The inmate has been relocated to CP in Raleigh for further supervision.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is actively working to determine what substance was involved and how it entered the facility. Until the investigation is complete and safety is confirmed, the prison will remain on lockdown.
Eastern Correctional Institution is a close-security prison that houses around 450 male inmates. Opened in 1983, it features five single-cell housing units. The facility operates alongside nearby Greene Correctional Institution and is located near Maury Correctional Institution.
As of now, state officials have not confirmed whether the inmate tied to the incident will face additional criminal charges.
