A tragedy unfolded Friday morning after deputies say a 78-year-old man confessed to killing his wife and son inside their Winston-Salem home.
According to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a welfare check at a residence on Raye Drive around 10:30 a.m. after receiving a concerning text message from Stephen Curtis Hicks, who claimed he had harmed his family.
When deputies arrived, no one answered the door, prompting officers to enter through an unlocked entrance. Inside, they discovered two deceased victims — identified as 76-year-old June Hicks and 45-year-old Eric Hicks.
Officials said Stephen was also found inside with minor injuries. He was immediately taken into custody and later charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
During his first court appearance this week, prosecutors revealed that he confessed to killing both his wife and son. He’s currently being held without bond at the Davidson County Detention Center and could face the death penalty if convicted.
His next court date is scheduled for November 3.
