A heartbreaking tragedy struck Columbus County early Saturday morning when four young sisters lost their lives in a house fire while home alone, according to the Columbus County Fire Marshal.
The fatal fire occurred around 2:30 a.m. on North Colony Road near Chadbourn, as reported by Columbus County News. Fire crews responded quickly, but the blaze had already taken a devastating toll.

The victims were four girls, reported to be 2, 4, 6, and 7 years old. Â Two 12-year-old girls managed to escape the fire. No adults were present at the time of the fire, officials confirmed. The cause of the fire has not yet been released, but the identities have now been confirmed, according to our updated report.

Authorities have not stated why the children were alone in the home. The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and State Bureau of Investigation are expected to assist in the case.
