CARY, NORTH CAROLINA – A Cary woman is in hot water after police say she pulled off a bold identity theft scheme to help someone else land an apartment.
According to an arrest warrant issued by the Cary Police Department on September 29, 2025, Lavarria Shaday Capers, of Patrick Circle in Cary, is facing two felony charges — Identity Theft and Felony Conspiracy.
Investigators say Capers unlawfully used another person’s personal details, including their name, date of birth, and employer information, without permission. The warrant claims Capers used that stolen info to fraudulently rent an apartment for another woman, identified as Laisha Rivas.
Investigators Say It Was a Team Effort
Authorities allege Capers and Rivas conspired together to carry out the identity theft. The scheme unraveled when the victim discovered their personal information had been used to secure a lease they never signed or approved.
Police say both women knowingly worked together to commit the crime, and the investigation could lead to additional charges as detectives dig deeper into the case.
Capers was taken into custody in Wake County and booked on a $2,500 bond.
