A North Carolina mother says Barbara Gorham, the director of the Boys & Girls Club located on Park Street in Farmville, allegedly sold her son $138 worth of vapes over a period of time. Gorham was terminated from her position on Wednesday.
Latoya Latham told The North Carolina Beat that she received a voicemail from her son’s teacher while at work on Tuesday (Oct.29), informing her that her 14-year-old son had been caught smoking marijuana. After addressing that issue, Latham became increasingly concerned about her son‘s access to vaping devices, which had also landed him in trouble before.
“Me and my husband don’t do this stuff and we only let him go to his father’s house,” Latham stated. “I asked him where he kept getting these vapes from and we have been trying to figure it out for a while.”
Upon returning home from work later Tuesday afternoon, Latham decided to look through her son’s phone, which she had already had in her possession due to a prior incident involving a vape. What she discovered was head-shaking to her.
“As I was going through his phone, that’s when I started seeing the messages to ‘Ms. Poocha’ about buying a vape,” she stated. “He was cash apping her money for these vapes.”
Farmville Boys & Girls Club Director accused of going to 14-year-old boy’s home to sell him a vape
To make matters worse, Latham alleged that Gorham had the audacity to drive to their home while she was away to deliver a vape to her son, as he had shared his location with her.
“There was also…in the screenshot I sent you, where she came to my house and sold him one because my son shared his location with her,” Latham explained.
She provided evidence that her son had indeed sent $138 to an account believed to be owned by Gorham through Cash App for the vapes she allegedly sold him.
In a statement to The NC Beat, Gorham denied the accusations, claiming, “I did not sale a vape to the kid.” However, in a Facebook post where Gorham has seemingly been making subliminal post, she announced to her followers, friends, and family that she was let go. However, the reason she provided for her termination is a complete lie.
Mother of 14-year-old turns Gorham in
After uncovering the shameful messages, Latham reached out to the regional Boys & Girls Club, informing them of Gorham’s alleged actions.Â
“The director called me back in like 30 minutes and she said when she got my message, she felt like she really needed to call me back, Latham stated. “I told her what happened and she was like shocked and apologetic. They’ve been very helpful.”
Latham was instructed to send all her evidence, and by today (Oct.30), she received a call that Gorham had been terminated and that law enforcement had been notified.
Alleged text messages shows Boys & Girls Club director arranging sales for disposable vape
Text messages shared by Latham revealed a disturbing pattern
In text messages provided to The NC Beat by Latham, it is shown that in July, Latham’s son requested a person named “Poocha” who Latham identified as Gorham, for a vape. He indicated that he had the money but was in Greenville, North Carolina, at the time. On July 30, he asked Gorham if he could get a “beam”(vape) for $20, to which Gorham allegedly responded, “ok.”
In another text message from August, Latham’s son sent Gorham a picture of a vape; however, she did not respond, as shown in the text messages. On August 30, Latham’s son texted Gorham, stating that he had $20 and asked if she could buy him a vape like hers. Gorham reportedly replied, “ok”, and sent her Cash App information to the 14-year-old after he asked for it.
In a photo message, Latham’s son sends Gorham a screenshot of a Cash App account, attempting to confirm whether it belongs to her before sending the money. Gorham allegedly confirms that it is indeed her Cash App account. In September, Latham’s son contacted Gorham again for another “beam” but he only had $15.
The next message suggests that they had spoken outside of text messages. Later, on September 10, Latham’s son followed up and asked Gorham if she had gone yet(assuming the store), to which she allegedly replied, “not yet.”
Around 6:17 p.m. on the same day (Sept.10), Latham’s son sent another message to Gorham, asking whether she would be at the Boys & Girls Club in the morning. She reportedly replied, “yes, at 10.” In another message, the following day (Sept.11), Gorham reportedly responded, “I’m outside bring yo a** on,” after Latham’s son asked if she was on her way.
On September 20, Latham’s son again asked Gorham for a vape pen. She allegedly responded with a thumbs-up and a laughing emoji. The minor then asked if Gorham could get the same type of vape he had, but in a different flavor. Gorham reportedly replied, “Like the one I got,” followed up with a photo to show her the type of vape he was referring to.
At one point, Latham’s son had to resend his location to Gorham so that she could allegedly go to his home and sell him a vape. The last communication between Gorham and Latham’s son was on October 3rd.
