A devastating car crash in Johnston County has claimed the lives of two best friends and left six children injured, one critically, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The crash happened Saturday around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Government Road and Jack Road near Clayton. Authorities said a 2016 Jeep, driven by 24-year-old Emely Rosario Diaz of Clayton, failed to stop at a stop sign at the T-intersection. The vehicle veered off-road, struck a ditch, and went airborne, crashing into a tree.
Police said the SUV was traveling at speeds of 70 mph.
Diaz, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was accompanied by her close friend, 23-year-old Sade Nadia Tomlinson of Knightdale. Tomlinson, seated in the front passenger seat, succumbed to her injuries en route to the hospital.
In the backseat were six children under the age of 12, none of whom were wearing seatbelts, according to investigators. All six were transported to the hospital, with one child suffering critical injuries.
Investigation Highlights Contributing Factors
Preliminary findings indicate that speed and failure to stop at the stop sign played significant roles in the crash. Everyone inside the vehicle did not have on seatbelts.
Safety Reminder
Officials have emphasized the importance of seatbelt use for all passengers, regardless of age or seating position, and urge drivers to observe traffic laws to prevent future tragedies.
As the investigation continues, no charges have been filed. Updates on the children’s conditions and further findings from the investigation are expected in the coming days.
Saw this on the news where a friend was being interviewed, saying Diaz “was a great mom, number one. She always put her girls first.” Always put her girls first, but couldn’t be bothered to use car seats, booster seats, or even seat belts? History of speeding with the kids unrestrained in the back seat, history of speeding in a school zone? Is this the low bar we have today for putting our kids first? Sorry for the loss of life, hope the kids have a more responsible caregiver in their future.
@BRANDON You are so right. Emely Rosario Diaz blew a stop sign at 70 mph right beside her house – she was completely drunk or on drugs.
If there were “substances” in the driver’s blood when they crashed, they can charge the person who sold them to her.
They said no charges have been filed. Who are they going to charge?
EXACTLY!!!!
