Amazon Workers in North Carolina Push for $30 Per Hour Wage as Union Vote Looms

Workers at an Amazon warehouse in Garner, North Carolina, are demanding a significant wage increase to $30 per hour as they prepare to vote on unionizing with the Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment (CAUSE). The vote, which began on February 10 and continues through February 14, 2025, will determine whether the nearly 4,700 employees will gain union representation in their negotiations with the e-commerce giant.

Among the issues at the forefront of the workers’ demands are:

  • Wage Increase: The workers are pushing for a substantial raise from the current starting wage of $18.50 per hour to $30 per hour, reflecting the growing cost of living and inflationary pressures.
  • Extended Breaks: Organizers are calling for longer and more consistent breaks throughout the workday, aiming to improve workers’ overall well-being.
  • Improved Job Protections: Workers are advocating for better job security and working conditions, which they argue will help create a healthier, more stable workforce.

Amazon Workers in North Carolina Demand $30 Per Hour Wages

In response to the growing momentum for unionization, Amazon has made it clear that it opposes the move. A spokesperson for the company said their belief is direct communication between employees and management.

“We believe our employees prefer to have their unique voice heard by working directly with our team,” the spokesperson said, signaling Amazon’s preference for avoiding third-party involvement.

The outcome of the vote in Garner could have far-reaching consequences. If the union vote passes, it could serve as a trailblazer for other Amazon facilities across the U.S., potentially sparking similar efforts at a time when labour unrest is on the rise in many industries. A successful unionization effort could also lead to increased labor costs for the company and force Amazon to reconsider its approach to employee relations.

On the other hand, if the vote fails, it may dissuade other Amazon workers from attempting similar efforts, which could maintain the company’s current operational model.

  1. I hope they’re successful in passing this union vote. Of course Amazon prefers the current model because we all know how that shit goes. “Boss, I need a raise.” Bossman: 🤣🤣🤣
