Amazon warehouse employees in Garner, North Carolina, have rejected an attempt to unionize. According to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), approximately 75% of participating workers opposed the measure, with 2,447 votes against and 829 in favor, out of 4,300 eligible voters.
The push for union representation was led by Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment (CAUSE), an independent organization founded in 2022 by former Amazon employee Rev. Ryan Brown. The group aimed to improve workplace conditions, particularly regarding COVID-19 safety protocols, $30 an hour pay, and overall working conditions.
Amazon Workers in North Carolina Push for $30 Per Hour Wage as Union Vote Looms
Amazon maintained its stance that a direct relationship with employees is more effective than union representation. The election process was not without drama. CAUSE accused Amazon of interfering with the vote count, claiming that the company prevented them from livestreaming the tally and removed three designated workers who were set to report the results.
Amazon denied the allegations, stating that both sides had equal representation during the count.
