NC A&T Audit Exposes Massive Favoritism at North Carolina’s Top HBCU

GREENSBORO, N.C. — An audit of North Carolina A&T State University reveals that millions in scholarship and tuition assistance cash was allegedly funneled to students with insider ties to staff, bypassing real qualifications or financial hardship. State Auditor Dave Boliek reported the details Thursday in a Board of Trustees meeting.

What the NC A&T Audit Revealed

Boliek laid out how university insiders allegedly played favorites with public money meant for deserving students.

“Students got an advantage because of who they knew and who they were connected to, not because of the merit or the need they exhibited to the university to receive aid,” the auditor stated.

$5.1 Million in Improper Aid Found in the NC A&T Audit

The State Auditor’s Rapid Response investigation uncovered $5.1 million in improper scholarship and financial aid disbursements spanning eight years at NC A&T. Investigators say weak controls and poor oversight let this “who-you-know” system thrive, with some aid handed out based on personal connections rather than academics or need.

“Gross Misconduct” NC A&T Audit

Boliek called the findings “gross misconduct” and described the situation as “a bit of a financial mess.” His office has already referred the case criminally to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and Guilford County District Attorney.

University leaders aren’t staying silent. NC A&T Chancellor told the board they caught the issues through their own internal audit and reached out to Boliek directly for full transparency.
