RICHLANDS, N.C. – What started as a normal Sunday evening ended in absolute heartbreak for an Onslow County family after two young children lost their lives in a tragic accident involving a frozen pond.

According to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Mayberry Lane around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, after a desperate 911 call reported that two 7-year-old children had fallen through ice and into a pond.

Both children were rushed to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, where medical teams did everything they could to save them.

Tragically, it wasn’t enough.

Despite aggressive life-saving efforts, both children later died from their injuries.

Sources tell The North Carolina Beat the twins are Benjamin and Sebastian.

Officials say the incident has been ruled an accident.

Authorities are asking the public to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers during this devastating time and are reminding parents and caregivers that frozen bodies of water can be extremely dangerous — especially for children.

“This is a heartbreaking day for our community,” said Sheriff Chris Thomas. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they face an unimaginable loss. We are also keeping our deputies, first responders, and everyone involved in this response in our thoughts, as incidents like this affect all of us deeply.”

Two young lives gone far too soon.
