An 80-year-old Maryland man is facing first-degree murder charges after allegedly killing his 78-year-old wife with a hammer during a heated argument inside their apartment at Leisure World on July 5, 2025.Â
The Fatal Incident
At approximately 6:00 p.m. on July 5, Montgomery County Police received a distress call from the Leisure World community. Upon arrival, officers found Beverly Rose Fletcher, 78, unresponsive in an office area of their apartment. Police later confirmed that Fletcher died from multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma. A hammer was found pressed against her neck, along with a bloodied knife and screwdriver nearby.

According to police reports, the altercation was triggered by an argument over Nation’s doctor. The situation escalated quickly, leading to physical violence. Nation allegedly shoved Fletcher to the floor, where she possibly struck her head. He then reportedly used the hammer to end her life.
Vivian Stewart Nation’s Arrest
Vivian Stewart Nation, 80, was arrested at the scene without incident. In a statement to investigators, Nation admitted to the altercation, claiming that it spiraled out of control after the dispute with his wife. Nation is currently being held without bond.

The court has ordered a psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness to stand trial. His next court appearance is set for July 16.
Leisure World, a popular retirement community housing over 8,000 residents, has been shaken by the tragic event. Montgomery County Police have assured residents that there is no ongoing threat.
