Wilson teacher killed in crash on I-40 in Durham County.
A heartbreaking tragedy struck early Sunday morning when 24-year-old Brijette Basden, a kindergarten teacher from Wilson, North Carolina, was killed in a crash on Interstate 40 near Page Road in Durham County.
The wreck happened around 4:45 a.m., according to the Durham Police Department.
Investigators say Brijette and her sister, Asrael Basden, had pulled over on the left side of I-40 to switch driving duties in their Ford Fusion. The vehicle was reportedly partially in the roadway when a Toyota Camry collided with it.
Authorities say Brijette Basden, who was standing outside the car, was struck during the impact and died from her injuries at the scene.
Wilson Teacher Killed Early Sunday Morning
Her sister was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say the crash remains under investigation, and as of Monday, no charges have been filed.
A Promising Young Educator Gone Too Soon
Brijette Basden had recently begun her teaching career as a kindergarten teacher at Sallie B. Howard School in Wilson, where staff say she quickly became a light in the classroom.
In a statement, the school said:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Ms. Brijette Basden, one of our Kindergarten teachers. Though she was new to our school community, Ms. Basden quickly made a lasting impact through her kindness, gentle spirit, and passion for educating young children.”
Before becoming a teacher, Basden was a student-athlete at Shaw University, where she competed in track and field. Her alma mater honored her as a driven and spirited individual whose presence inspired others.
The loss of Brijette has left both the Wilson and Durham communities heartbroken.
