Special agents with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation confirmed that Charles Stokes, 44, was arrested Monday night in Kenbridge, Virginia.

Authorities say Stokes allegedly fired into a vehicle Sunday afternoon in Lunenburg County during what investigators described as a domestic-related incident. The woman inside the vehicle was taken to the hospital. Police have not released an update on her condition.

Stokes, who serves as a part-time officer with the Kenbridge Police Department, was off duty at the time of the shooting.

Charles Stokes, the Virginia Police Officer Accused of Shooting Woman, is facing felony charges after investigators say he fired shots during a domestic dispute and fled across state lines.

Investigators believe Stokes initially fled in a black Toyota Camry, which was later recovered Sunday at Brocklyn Hauling — located in Vance County near Henderson, not within Henderson city limits.

A second vehicle — a 2007 silver Honda Civic with Virginia plates TGL 9143 — was reported stolen from the same location.

The Henderson Police Department later clarified that the vehicle was found outside city limits, and that the matter at that location was handled by the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, which had primary jurisdiction.

Brocklyn Hauling owner Anthony Shumaker confirmed Stokes had worked for the company for eight years and said the vehicle was taken without permission. In a statement, the company said it is fully cooperating with law enforcement and has provided all available information and security footage.

“Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the young woman injured in the shooting,” the statement read. “Her wellbeing is our foremost concern.”

Stokes now faces two felony charges:

  • Aggravated malicious wounding

  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
