CMPD investigates Uptown Charlotte mass shooting scene with multiple victims

Charlotte is shaken after a deadly mass shooting erupted in the heart of uptown early Sunday, July 13. One man was killed and five others were injured when gunfire broke out just steps from popular nightclub Encore on North College Street—and now, two men are facing serious charges.

What Went Down

It all happened around 2:00 a.m., when Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers—along with off-duty cops already working security—heard shots ring out near the 300 block of North College Street. The nightlife scene was packed at the time.

37-year-old Arleigh Alexzander Bryant, a known employee of Encore Night Club, was found dead at the scene. Five more victims were hit but are expected to survive, according to officials.

Who Got Caught

CMPD wasted no time. With help from traffic cams and their Real-Time Crime Center, cops tracked a silver BMW spotted fleeing the scene.

Damien Evans, 25, was arrested with a firearm after the uptown Charlotte shooting. Police say he exited the suspect BMW with a gun equipped with an extended mag.

Allegedly hopped out the same BMW post-shooting. An off-duty cop caught him holding a gun with an extended magazine.

He is charged with 2 counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, and Possession of a stolen firearm

Both men have prior criminal records, including weapons charges and violations while on probation.

Police Ongoing Probe

CMPD says nine off-duty officers were already on site, which helped them respond fast. A security guard on scene pointed officers toward the suspect vehicle. After a brief pursuit, it was found abandoned on Harris Cove Drive with a stolen gun inside.

Seven firearms were recovered from the scene in total.

CMPD’s Deputy Chief Ryan Butler told the media this was a chaotic and dangerous moment—but praised the quick action of officers. Investigators believe more people were involved, either as shooters or witnesses. The search for additional suspects is ongoing.
