The UNC Chapel Hill April Fools controversy is gaining attention after a viral TikTok by @gugunicole called out posts many students say crossed the line.
CHAPEL HILL, NC — University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is catching serious heat after a wave of so-called “April Fool’s” content left students calling it what they believe it really is — offensive, tone-deaf, and racially insensitive.
The backlash picked up steam after TikTok user @gugunicole (Gugu Nicole) posted a video breaking down the situation — and let’s just say… she did NOT hold back.
TikTok User @gugunicole Calls It Out
In the now-viral video, Gugu Nicole — a junior at UNC — detailed multiple posts from university-affiliated platforms that she says crossed the line.
She questioned how content like this could be:
“planned, recorded, edited, and posted… without anyone thinking it was wrong.”
Her message was this wasn’t just satire — it was harmful.
Daily Tar Heel Posts Stir the Pot
While clearly labeled as satire, many students say the topics — immigration enforcement and diversity programs — are too serious to joke about right now.
TikTok Skit Pushes It Over the Edge
But the REAL outrage came from a TikTok posted by Hill After Hours.
According to @gugunicole, the video featured three white students acting out a “journey” to South Campus, referring to it as a “third world country,” joking about needing tasers and pepper spray, and acting shocked that South Campus had buildings.
The student also said that in the video there was a warning: “don’t touch anything, you might get sepsis.”
The History Behind the Backlash
What makes this even deeper is the history tied to it. Gugu Nicole pointed out that since the 1970s, when Black students were first allowed to enroll at UNC, about 90% of Black students lived on South Campus and that pattern has largely continued.
So for many, the skit didn’t feel random — it felt like it was mocking a real racial divide rooted in the university’s history.
“At What Point Is It Just Racism?”
In her video, @gugunicole asked the question a lot of people are now repeating:
“At what point do we stop calling things satire and start addressing them for what they really are?”
She also called out the influence of platforms like The Daily Tar Heel, noting their large audience, and saying content like this shapes campus culture — whether people want to admit it or not.
@gugunicole Please please get this to the right audience. We can’t sit here & be silent and accept unfair treatment. #fyp #unc #racism #pwi #relatable ♬ original sound – Gugu Nicole
