U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth Renames Fort Liberty to Fort Bragg

On Monday, Feb. 10, 2025, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum renaming Fort Liberty in North Carolina back to its original name, Fort Bragg.

This decision serves to honor the legacy of Private First Class Roland L. Bragg, a World War II hero recognized for his extraordinary bravery during the Battle of the Bulge. Bragg’s courage earned him the prestigious Silver Star and Purple Heart, and now, his name is immortalized in the U.S. Army’s history through the base’s renaming.

Originally named in 1918 after Confederate General Braxton Bragg, the base was one of the largest military installations globally and a critical hub for U.S. Army operations. However, in 2023, as part of an ongoing initiative to remove Confederate associations from military installations, Fort Bragg was renamed Fort Liberty. Now, in a move that has garnered significant attention, Secretary Hegseth’s memorandum restores the base’s historic name—Fort Bragg.

This renaming action aligns closely with a key promise made by President Donald Trump during his 2024 campaign, where he pledged to restore the name of Fort Bragg. The renaming process, expected to cost around $8 million.

Fort Bragg, officially named Fort Roland L. Bragg, remains one of the U.S. Army’s most important installations, housing around 57,000 troops in Fayetteville. It serves as a critical base for the Airborne and Special Operations Forces, ensuring its continued strategic importance for the U.S. military.

  1. In my opinion, it should have never changed. You can remove statues, change names, but you can not change history!! It made no sense at all!!
