Trump accuses Obama of treason during a high-stakes press conference with Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. In the Oval Office, President Trump claimed that former President Barack Obama led a “covert coup” to rig the 2016 election.
“The leader of the gang was President Obama. He’s guilty… This was treason,” Trump said, when pressed on renewed DOJ interest in Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

The explosive moment came as pressure grows over the upcoming release of Epstein’s sealed court documents, with some critics accusing Trump of trying to distract from his own potential ties.

Trump Accuses Obama of Treason
Trump claims newly declassified intelligence—allegedly released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard—exposes a “treasonous conspiracy” involving Barack Obama, Joe Biden, James Comey, and others. This is the first time Trump accuses Obama of treason directly on record.
Obama Camp Fires Back
Obama’s spokesperson fired back immediately, labeling Trump’s accusations as “bizarre,” “baseless,” and a “clear attempt to distract” from other scandals. They cited two landmark government reports:
-
The 2017 U.S. Intelligence Community Assessment, and
-
The 2020 Bipartisan Senate Intelligence Report.

Both reports confirmed Russia’s interference in the 2016 election but found no evidence that Obama or his administration colluded or engaged in any vote manipulation.
Here is the full statement from Obama’s spokesperson, Patrick Rodenbush:
Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response. But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.
Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes. These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio.
With headlines heating up around the Epstein documents, some experts believe this is a classic deflection tactic.
