Travis Carroll, a police officer with the Emerald Isle Police Department, has been placed on administrative leave after a Facebook post reportedly made from his personal account caught the internet’s attention.
The post allegedly criticized Republicans for their response to attacks on Democrats and made direct mention of Charlie Kirk, sparking backlash from local residents and prompting an internal investigation.

According to Emerald Isle Town Manager Frank Rush, the town is distancing itself from Carroll’s personal comments. Officials were quick to clarify that the now-viral post was not connected in any way to the Emerald Isle Police Department’s or Town of Emerald Isle’s official pages.
While officials haven’t confirmed the exact content of the post, a screenshot circulating online appears to show Carroll writing:
“I think perhaps you’re not seeing the other side of it. When Nancy Pelosi’s husband got attacked and hospitalized in his home, Republicans were laughing, high- fiving, and doing backflips… hell, it wasn’t just two months ago they were laughing and high-giving about feeding immigrants to alligators…Who were ALSO fathers, mothers, and brothers. Not to mention Charlie being openly racist. So you can imagine, while the act is horrific, certainly he ain’t really winning in the empathy department.”
Emerald Isle Police Chief Michael Panzarella dropped a very by-the-book statement in response to the incident:
“I am committed to ensuring that all concerns are reviewed promptly and fairly. This matter is under investigation to determine the facts, origin, and motivation associated with the post, and whether its content is consistent with departmental standards and expectations. This matter will be addressed in a professional and impartial manner, in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Emerald Isle Police Department, the Town of Emerald Isle, and federal and state law, while ensuring due process.”

He told the truth tho I don’t see nothing wrong here!!!
So, you get placed on administrative leave for speaking the truth? I guess 1st amendment rights are okay for some, not for others. Opinions are fine, as long as you don’t direct them in any way toward a white, racist republican. Founding fathers are rolling in their Graves.
No, you get administrative leave (probably paid) to determine if insensitive and nasty comments the majority of the public disagrees with are “consistent with department standards and expectations”.
I don’t see where he said anything wrong..He spoke the truth and they mad why cause the truth hurts
Freedom of speech is everyone’s right! Police or bartender, white black or purple, any religion, any age, democrat or republican. This is America! Stop this craziness!
Right, if we didn’t have freedom of speech, people would be imprisoned for their statements. Thankfully we have the first amendment and they can say whatever they want.
Free speech protects private citizens, but police officers accept a higher standard. Their words must uphold neutrality and public trust.
This isn’t about silencing opinion—it’s about whether an officer’s comments undermine confidence in his ability to treat all citizens fairly. When trust is eroded, the whole department is affected.
Yes it is exactly about silencing free speech bc Magats have been trying to get people fired all over the country bc they don’t care that this idiot died! Shitting in our first amendment rights but want to cry about doing all they can to keep their second amendment rights when a rifle actually took his life. It’s hypocrisy and it’s fascism and that’s the real reason that he died.
Right. People can say whatever they want but your employer is also free to let you go if they think something you said is insensitive or unprofessional.
And of course this is sure to upset around 90% of the community as EI is a very Republican area.
Knowing that you are a local city/government employee, you know better than to go on social media and proclaim your opinion about pretty much anything! There are social media policies that you review and agree to follow when you accept the position. It’s not worth losing your job over! Actually, it’s not worth arguing online over because it’s not going to change the opposing person’s opinion about the situation. It never has and it never will.
Freedom of speech no matter who you are. No one should be put on leave or fired from their job just for stating their opinion. Look around a lot of people stating opinions and they are still working, It all comes down to who you are and the title of your job which isn’t fair.
The compulsory mourning of state supported political commentators reminds me of the stuff we see happening in Russia, or God forbid, North Korea. The right in America never cared about free speech or any other of our national principles for liberty – these things are just tools for them to use and discard whenever it’s convenient. Shame on them.
