Former NC DHHS Caseworker Admits Role in SNAP Fraud Scheme That Drained $102K From Food Assistance Program

WILMINGTON, N.C. — A former North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services employee has admitted in federal court that she abused her position to pull off a massive food-stamp fraud scheme, according to federal prosecutors.

Authorities say 46-year-old Shermeca McCrary, of Wayne County, and a former caseworker with NCDHHS Division of Social Services, used her inside access to SNAP accounts to siphon off more than $102,000 in government assistance funds meant for low-income families.

From 2021 through 2024, prosecutors allege McCrary secretly tapped into the benefit accounts of eligible recipients and rerouted the money for her own personal use — all while employed by the very agency tasked with protecting those benefits.

Shermeca McCrary, a former NC DHHS caseworker, admitted to SNAP fraud after abusing her position to steal $102,000 in government benefits over three years.

McCrary officially pleaded guilty to theft of government property on November 24, federal officials confirmed.

Now she’s facing serious consequences:

  • Up to 10 years in federal prison

  • A possible $250,000 fine

  • And a forfeiture judgment ordering her to pay back the full $102,000
