The Town of Smithfield, North Carolina, is in mourning after the unexpected death of longtime Councilman Marlon Lee, who passed away on Sunday, at the age of 51. Lee, served District 1 on the Smithfield Town Council for more than a decade.
A LIFE OF SERVICE AND DEDICATION
Born and raised in East Smithfield, Marlon Lee was elected to the Town Council in December 2013 and quickly became a respected voice for equity, representation, and progress. His leadership was marked by a deep love for the community and a tireless commitment to ensuring that every resident—especially those in underserved neighborhoods—was heard and represented.
Mayor Andy Moore said, “Councilman Lee’s unwavering commitment to justice and the well-being of our town has left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him.”
BEYOND POLITICS: A BELOVED COACH AND MENTOR
Outside of Town Hall, Lee was a pillar in local youth development. He coached both girls’ basketball and volleyball at Clayton High School, where his leadership helped shape the lives of countless young athletes—including his daughter, Y’Zana Lee.
“I’m gonna still see him as my coach,” Y’Zana said. “I’m gonna play hard, play smart, play together like he always told me.”
His influence extended far beyond the scoreboard—he was known for teaching life values like discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
