I honestly don’t know whether to say this is safe, but we must keep our children protected in schools all around the world, not just in North Carolina schools, specifically Madison County. Although officers in Uvalde failed to protect the children inside Robb Elementary School, that doesn’t mean that other departments will fail in the case of a mass school shooting. But, parents don’t feel like putting the same weapons killing kids in schools to protect them is the right answer.
Madison County, North Carolina sheriff, Buddy Harwood announced his plan to help improve security for Madison County Schools during a press conference in June.
In the press conference, he argued that a deputy with a handgun is not always enough to stop certain situations. Because of that, Sheriff Harwood said he decided to arm every school resource officer with an AR-15 rifle with optics and accessories.Â
The rifles and accessories were bought using money donated by residents in Madison County, according to Sheriff Harwood.
Sheriff Haywood said that every officer will attend hours of extra tactical training with these rifles to ensure they are ready to use them. He added that each rifle will also be kept in a gun safe in an undisclosed location at each school.
Sheriff Harwood said he is working with Madison County School Superintendent Dr. Weil Hoffman and the Board of Education to implement this new safety measure.
I’m torn between ‘yea & nay on this one. What happens when those ‘unstable’ teachers get upset with students they say they feel threatened by because the students raise their voices or make minor threats? All teachers aren’t there for the child’s well-being. Some are just there for a pay check. Times have really changed.
