ROY COOPER’S BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!
Former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) officially launched his 2026 U.S. Senate campaign Monday, setting his sights on the soon-to-be-vacant seat currently held by retiring Republican Senator Thom Tillis.
Cooper, 68, enters the race with an undefeated record in statewide elections and a résumé stacked with nearly four decades of public service, including four terms as North Carolina Attorney General (2001–2017) and two full terms as governor (2017–2025).
A High-Stakes Flip Opportunity for Democrats
With Republicans narrowly holding a 53–47 majority in the U.S. Senate, Democrats are eyeing North Carolina as one of the few realistic opportunities to flip a GOP-held seat. The state hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 2008, making Cooper’s name recognition and moderate image a strategic boost in a crucial battleground.
Cooper vs. Trump-Backed Whatley?
The Republican primary is heating up, with current Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley preparing a campaign backed by former President Donald Trump. Lara Trump, previously rumored to run, has since ruled herself out of contention.
An early showdown between Cooper and Whatley is shaping up to be one of the most watched and fiercely contested Senate battles of the 2026 cycle.
