Rapper YBT, also known as Young Boss Tevo and a member of Durham’s 83 Babies rap group, was shot and killed in a late-night double shooting.
DURHAM, N.C. — The Bull City is mourning after a late-night shooting turned deadly, claiming the life of a rising local rapper and another man in what police are now investigating as a double homicide.
23-year-old Tevin Burney, better known as YBT (Young Boss Tevo) — and widely recognized as a member of Durham rap group 83 Babies — was shot and killed just before midnight Friday alongside 26-year-old Jarrett Godfrey.

The shooting happened on North Roxboro Street near Old Oxford Road.
When officers arrived, they found Burney, Godfrey, and a woman, all suffering from gunshot wounds. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman survived and is expected to recover.
Authorities have not released any suspect information, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
WHO WAS YBT (YOUNG BOSS TEVO)?
YBT wasn’t just another local rapper — he was part of Durham’s well-known rap collective “83 Babies,” a group that built a strong buzz across the city’s underground music scene.

Known for his raw delivery and street-centered storytelling, YBT helped shape the group’s identity while also pushing his own solo career.
The 83 Babies movement had already made noise locally with viral tracks and a loyal following, and YBT was considered one of the standout voices from the crew.
Fans describe him as consistent, hungry, and “next up” out of Durham — a young artist who was actively grinding to turn local fame into something bigger.
Durham Police say the case remains active.
