A well-known pastor from Raleigh, North Carolina has passed away, as confirmed by his wife in a Facebook post. Jewel Barnwell, the spouse of James Barnwell, pastor of Transformation Christian Church on Garner Road, shared the news of his death on Tuesday morning, stating that he died on Saturday, July 27.
“He can finally rest,” Jewel said in her Facebook post. “Words can never express how LOVE works. But our love worked. For 23 years, it worked.”
According to the church’s website, Pastor James Barnwell was called to ministry at 19 and delivered his first sermon in August 2001. He was ordained in 2003 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Hollis. At just 20 years old, with no friends or family nearby, he enrolled at Shaw University, where he pursued a double major in English and Religion and Philosophy.
Pastor Barnwell began his ministry in Raleigh in the Spring of 2009, where it has since flourished, according to the church’s website. The church describes itself as a “Christ–centered church that believes that God meets us all where we are.”
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 11 AM at Transformation Christian Church, located at 1500 Garner Road in Raleigh, North Carolina.
