Pastor Mitchell Summerfield, a Raleigh pastor, has traded his pulpit possibly for a prison cell after filing fraudulent paperwork—and now he’s facing hard time after pleading guilty to scamming over $400,000 in COVID-19 relief funds.
Pastor Mitchell Summerfield SCAM!
Pastor Summerfield, of Word of God Fellowship Church on Rock Quarry Road, confessed his sins Tuesday, May 27, to conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud—aka, lying through his holy teeth to get pandemic money. Not only did he serve sermons, but apparently he was also serving up fake tax documents to the feds.
The feds say Summerfield created fake PPP and EIDL loan applications under a series of sketchy business names—Winning Ways, KHS Investments, and Vision and Destiny. Real talk? The only “vision” he had was finessing Uncle Sam. He submitted doctored IRS forms and completely made-up income statements—all to line his dirty own pockets.
Between July 2020 and July 2021, while preaching faith to his flock, he was preaching false numbers to the SBA and banks. The funds meant to help struggling small businesses during the COVID-19 crisis? He spent it on himself.
Now, he’s looking at 30 years behind bars, a $1 million fine, and five years of supervised release. And let’s not forget—restitution to be determined. So we hope the passah and his church has enough prayers stored in the safe.
The PPP and EIDL programs, part of the CARES Act, were meant to be a lifeline. But for Pastor Summerfield – They were a hustle.
He called it a blessing. The court calls it fraud.
