North Carolina drivers, get ready for a game-changing update! Starting December 1, 2025, the state will officially ditch window tint inspections as part of the yearly safety check. That means, no more sweating over whether your tint is too dark. This major shift is thanks to Senate Bill 391 (2025–2026), which was recently signed into law by Governor Josh Stein.
What’s Changing?
Inspection stations won’t be checking it with meters anymore. However, there is the “Roll-Down Rule”, which means drivers with tinted windows must now roll down their driver-side window when being approached by police. If the officer comes from the passenger side, that window needs to be rolled down too.
When Does This Kick In?
All changes will officially go into effect on December 1, 2025, so until then, the current inspection requirements still apply.
