Traumatic brain injury during labor
A North Carolina mother, known as “Bossyy Bri” on Facebook, has come forward with a heartbreaking story about her son Amir, who reportedly suffered a traumatic brain injury during labor and delivery at WakeMed in Raleigh, located on New Bern Avenue. Bri claims that the injury was the result of a nurse’s negligence, which led to substantial brain damage.
Bri stated that her son’s traumatic brain injury caused the loss of critical motor functions such as breathing, sucking, and swallowing. As a result, Amir required life-sustaining technologies like a ventilator and continuous care.

Amir spent the first two weeks of his life in a coma, according to Bri. Despite the dire circumstances, Bri shared that her son displayed remarkable resilience by opening his eyes after two weeks. Bri remained steadfast in her commitment to Amir’s care during this challenging period, taking leave from work to closely monitor the ventilator and observe Amir’s attempts to breathe, which were hindered by the brain damage.
“Throughout his brief life, I was committed to his care, taking leave from work to closely monitor the ventilator and observe his attempt to breathe, which was impeded by the brain damage,” Bri said in an emotional post.
Bri also noted that Amir consistently responded to her presence, reacting noticeably to her touch. As her first child, Amir’s time in the hospital became an intimate and deeply emotional experience, with many days and nights spent solely in each other’s company, forming a strong bond between mother and son.
“I have found this to be utterly devastating,” Bri concluded.

In the comments on our social media post, Bri shared more details. She was given Pitocin, a synthetic form of oxytocin, to induce labor. By the time she was checked, Amir had delivered himself but was unresponsive. He had to be resuscitated but remained in a vegetative state due to the lack of oxygen and blood flow to his brain.
