The sister of convicted murderer Ramone Alston, who escaped last Tuesday, has now been charged with helping him. Police reported that they have charged 43-year-old Monique Brady in connection with Alston’s escape.
Police stated that they charged Brady with felony aiding and abetting a fugitive, as well as felony harboring an escapee.
Ramone Alston, a convicted murderer in North Carolina, who escaped from police last Tuesday during a medical visit to Hillsborough, was captured at a hotel near Charlotte early Friday morning.
Around 2 a.m., Friday, Charlotte SWAT teams, the FBI, and Kannapolis Police surrounded a hotel in Kannapolis and arrested Alston. Authorities also took into custody a 32-year-old woman named Jacobia Crisp, who is an acquaintance of Alston. She was arrested in Alamance County and faces charges of felony aiding and abetting a fugitive.
Officials had increased the reward to $50,000 on the third day of the search for Alston, who at the time was considered “extremely dangerous” and was convicted of murdering a 1-year-old on Christmas Day in 2015.
Murder suspect escaped from UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus parking lot
Alston was supposed to attend a medical appointment at UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus at 7 a.m, Tuesday morning. During transport from Bertie Correctional Institution, he managed to remove his leg restraints. When officers arrived at the appointment and were escorting him out of the prison van, he knocked one of them down and fled into the woods, according to police reports.
At the time of his escape, Alston was still handcuffed and connected to a belly chain. Sheriff Blackwood stated that officers pursued him but were unable to catch up.
Did Ramone Alston have help escaping?
North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections Secretary Todd Ishee and Sheriff Blackwood held a press conference on Tuesday but did not provide details on how Alston escaped his restraints. Sheriff Blackwood did mention that Alston had friends and family living in the area, although he did not specifically name anyone who may have assisted Alston at the time.
Police arrested both Alston and Crisp around the same time. Alamance County Sheriff’s Office said she was booked into the jail around 8 a.m., Friday morning after being arrested around 2 a.m. at her home in Burlington. She has since bonded out of jail on a $30,000 bond.
According to officials, Alston and Crisp met after Alston was incarcerated, and most of their relationship was conducted via phone and other forms of communication, according to wfmynews2.
Officers couldn’t use guns due to them being in a lockbox
Sheriff Blackwood noted that the officers transporting Alston were unable to use their firearms in the escape because their weapons were secured in a lockbox inside the van, which is standard procedure during inmate transport.
