Newton Police Lieutenant Indicted For Killing Motorcyclist
The details of a Newton Police lieutenant indicted on second-degree murder charges are sending chills through North Carolina after prosecutors say he fatally shot 21-year-old Camden Skyler Childers.

The incident happened just before midnight on June 26, 2025, when Newton officers attempted a traffic stop on a motorcycle riding down U.S. Highway 70. Police cited the driver for failing to display a registration plate, speeding, and reckless driving.

The motorcyclist, identified as Camden Skyler Childers from Stanley, refused to stop and led officers on a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended in Conover when Childers’ motorcycle crashed into a patrol vehicle on Northern Drive NW.
According to prosecutors, a scuffle followed. Lieutenant Carlos Alverto Uribe — now the Newton police lieutenant indicted — allegedly ordered Childers to the ground, kicked him in the abdomen while his hands were up, and then shot him, falsely claiming the young man reached for an officer’s gun. Bodycam footage reportedly proves Childers never made such a move.

After an independent SBI (State Bureau of Investigation) review, a grand jury returned a second-degree murder indictment against Uribe on July 21, 2025. District Attorney Scott Reilly made it clear: the use of deadly force was not justified.
Uribe turned himself in, was released on a $100,000 bond, and must surrender his firearms and passport. He has been placed on administrative leave without pay, with his next court appearance set for August 18, 2025.
