The Raleigh Police Department has apprehended a man in connection with a 1998 rape case following the emergence of new evidence from a sexual assault kit and DNA database.
Averette Alston, 53, has been charged for his purported involvement in the August 26, 1998, rape that took place on South State Street. Alston was arrested on Thursday and is facing charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense, and first-degree kidnapping, with a bond set at $3 million.
WRAL reported that Alston’s arrest was made possible by a positive match from the Combined DNA Index System.
