A Kinston couple, Montez and Jalesia Nelson, have been charged with second-degree arson following accusations of intentionally burning their home to collect insurance money. The announcement was made by North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey on Monday, January 13, 2024.
In addition to the arson charge, the Nelsons face felony conspiracy, insurance fraud, and obtaining property under false pretenses. Authorities allege that on August 8, 2024, the couple set fire to their residence at 483 Back Street in Kinston. They then filed a claim with American Modern Property and Casualty Insurance Company, denying any knowledge of the fire’s cause.
Investigators revealed that the couple allegedly defrauded the insurance company of $57,638.38. On January 6, 2025, the Kinston Police Department arrested both Montez and Jalesia Nelson. They were released on a $100,000 bond.
