A 31-year-old North Carolina man is facing serious charges after authorities say he caused a deadly crash that claimed the life of 27-year-old Makaylah Brielle Dixon of Snow Hill.
According to warrants, Keontae Hines, of Hookerton, was arrested Thursday, October 16, 2025, and charged with second-degree murder, felony obstructing justice, felony hit and run resulting in serious injury or death, reckless driving with wanton disregard, DWLR impaired revocation, and driving left of center.

Court documents show that on Sunday, October 12, 2025, around 7:18 a.m., Hines was behind the wheel of a black 2019 GMC Yukon Denali on SR 1058 when the vehicle ran off the road to the right, overcorrected, and then flipped several times after striking a ditch on Fort Run Road near Peanut Road.
The second-degree murder warrant states that Dixon, who was a backseat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators allege Hines acted “with malice” by driving under the influence while his license was revoked for a prior impaired offense.

Officials said Dixon’s body was discovered six feet up in a tree, thrown from the vehicle during the violent crash.
According to warrants, Hines attempted to deceive law enforcement by lying about his whereabouts and involvement in the crash in an effort “to defraud a fatal crash investigation.” Authorities said he also fled the scene before officers arrived and failed to report the accident.

The misdemeanor reckless driving charge accuses him of operating the vehicle “carelessly and heedlessly in willful and wanton disregard of the rights and safety of others.”
Hines was booked into the Greene County Detention Center and is being held without bond.
His next court appearance is scheduled for October 24, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.
