On Tuesday, the North Carolina Attorney General announced that the state has officially joined a coalition of Democratic-led states in a lawsuit filed in Massachusetts against the United States Department of Agriculture and the Office of Management and Budget.
The lawsuit accuses the Trump administration of refusing to tap into a $6 billion emergency reserve fund for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as a potential government shutdown looms.
Jackson and other attorneys general argue this “pause” on benefit disbursements is illegal and puts millions of Americans in danger — particularly families that rely on food assistance to survive.
Jackson didn’t hold back, saying the federal government is playing “shutdown politics” and “placing the burden on vulnerable families and communities.”
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR NORTH CAROLINA
Roughly 1.4 million North Carolinians, including 600,000 children, rely on SNAP benefits every month. Any delay in disbursements could create immediate food insecurity for families across the state.
And in the education lawsuit, officials warned the funding freeze could jeopardize up to 1,000 public school jobs if not resolved.
