A video obtained by The North Carolina Beat shows 3-year-old Marley Burgess wandering in the street near a busy intersection on Tuesday while under the care of Kindercare Daycare on Stantonsburg Rd in Greenville. His parents are outraged.
The daycare staff were absent when a photo circulated on social media showing the child, now identified as 3-year-old Marley, approximately 423 feet away from the daycare, in front of Labcorp.
Mecca Burgess told The North Carolina Beat that she and Marley’s father, Robert Burgess, were on their way to Wake County to assist someone with a move when they received a call from the daycare’s director.
“When she called me, she said ‘oh it was a little incident today’,” Mecca said.
Mecca said she didn’t know the depth of the incident until two hours later when her sister tagged her in a viral Facebook post, asking if the child in the photo was her “nephew”. Mecca expressed her gratitude to the community member who rescued her son from the street.
“It was so good that the lady stopped, and she’s like an angel, I swear,” Mecca said. “She said she was going 15 mph because it was a red light, and she was slowing down because the light was red and she saw him [Marley] coming, so she put her car in park, got out, and grabbed him.”

She explained that the woman brought Marley to Labcorp, where a daycare staff member approached and took him from her. Mecca noted that this incident occurred on her son’s second day at Kindercare.
Greenville police reported that they were called to the daycare shortly before 11:00 a.m. and are currently investigating the incident, as well as notifying the relevant local and state regulatory agencies.
Kindercare sent out a text to parents regarding the incident. The message stated, “I am sure you may know what happened and we are doing everything possible to ensure that this does not happen again to any of our children.”
