The Greene County Sheriff’s Office and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Baldwin was served a murder warrant on Tuesday, October 7, connected to the death of 60-year-old Ernest Nichols.
According to officials, Nichols was found unresponsive in his dorm just before 7 a.m. Sunday, October 5. Staff reportedly jumped into emergency mode, performing CPR, but it was too late — Nichols was pronounced dead by EMS at 7:22 a.m.
Baldwin ain’t no stranger to violence — the man’s been behind bars since his 2010 conviction out of Richmond County for a second-degree murder case. He’s serving his time at Greene Correctional Institution, but now it looks like he’s stacking another body on his record.

As for Nichols — the so-called “victim” — he wasn’t exactly innocent himself. According to the Associated Press, Nichols was a former middle school teacher in Charlotte who got sentenced to 18 years after pleading guilty to raping his son’s 15-year-old girlfriend.
That was back in 2011 when he was 46.

The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) was called in at the request of the Greene County Sheriff. They’re now working alongside the Department of Adult Correction to figure out what really went down inside that dorm.
Officials say Baldwin will remain in the custody of the Department of Adult Correction.
