Three E.E. Smith High School Students Killed in Devastating Fayetteville Crash
A car crash has left a North Carolina community heartbroken after three students from E.E. Smith High School died and another was critically injured Wednesday evening on Rosehill Road in Fayetteville.
The deadly crash happened around 7:22 p.m. Wednesday in the 2700 block of Rosehill Road. Police say the vehicle the students were riding in veered off the road, slammed into a telephone pole, and then went down an embankment before coming to rest by a tree.
First responders found three teens dead at the scene. A fourth victim was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill in critical condition.
Officials have not released the identities of the victims but The North Carolina Beat can confirm that #21 Jaihyon Elliot, #11 Trevor Merritt, and #4 Nick Williams, all died in the crash.
Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash, and the investigation remains active.
The victims were all football players at E.E. Smith High School, according to school officials.
Out of respect, the school’s scheduled Friday night game against South View High School has been postponed.
Grief counselors will be on campus to support students, teachers, and teammates as the community grieves this devastating loss.
