3 ECU Football Players Suspended After Wild Gunfire Arrest Near Campus

ECU

Three East Carolina University football players have been suspended indefinitely after a wild early-morning incident landed them in handcuffs.

On Sunday, July 20, Greenville Police responded to multiple calls of gunfire just a mile from campus on Locust Drive. When officers arrived, they found two defensive linemen—Jackson “J.D.” Lampley, 21, and Preston Carr, 22—outside the home. Both admitted to firing a handgun into the air. Inside the house, wide receiver Brock Spalding, 21, refused to come out and had to be arrested with the help of the Emergency Response Team.

ECU Hits Pause On Players

ECU Athletics wasted no time handing down suspensions to all three players, pulling them from all team activities while the investigation plays out.

Records show all three athletes were booked into the Pitt County jail and later released on $1,000 bonds.

Two of the suspended players—Lampley and Spalding—were recently named preseason All–American Athletic Conference selections by Phil Steele Magazine, making their absence a major blow as ECU gears up to face NC State on August 28.
