Dog Sale Turns Violent in New Bern After Counterfeit Money Used

Mugshot of Dylan Brite, arrested in New Bern after a counterfeit dog sale led to a shooting and car chase.

What began as a seemingly simple dog sale ended in criminal charges for a 20-year-old man from New Bern. Authorities say Dylan Brite is now behind bars after an incident involving counterfeit cash escalated into a gunshot and high-speed chase across Craven County.

Fake Bills Lead to Gunfire

The incident started just after 9:21 p.m. on Monday, when Craven County deputies were alerted to a shots-fired call near Wildlife Road and US 17. The victim told investigators they had sold a dog on Antioch Road—but were handed counterfeit bills in return.

Upon realizing the money was fake, the seller pursued the buyer’s vehicle, which led to a dangerous escalation. As the chase began, an occupant inside the suspect’s vehicle allegedly opened fire on the seller.

The gunfire did not result in any injuries, but it did trigger a county-wide law enforcement response.

High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrest

Deputies located the suspect vehicle on US 17 near Bridgeton, but the driver—now identified as Dylan Brite—refused to stop, resulting in a high-speed chase. Eventually, the pursuit ended in a crash, and Brite was taken into custody.

Authorities say Brite, a 20-year-old resident of Delanie Way in New Bern, now faces several serious charges, including, Felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle, Felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver marijuana, and Speeding.
