Durham police have launched a homicide investigation following the tragic shooting death of 22-year-old John Edward Riggins II, who was discovered inside a vehicle Monday night in the upscale Hope Valley community.
On April 14, 2025, shortly before 9 p.m., officers responded to a report of gunfire in the area of Courtland Drive and Brighton Road. Upon arrival, they found Riggins inside a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services pronounced him dead at the scene. According to our research, Riggins lived on Courtland Drive.

The shooting took place in the Hope Valley neighborhood, a quiet residential area near the Hope Valley Country Club, known for its serene environment and family-friendly atmosphere. Several neighbors reported hearing what sounded like fireworks just before police arrived.
As of now, no suspects have been identified or taken into custody.
