Police say a Durham man kills girlfriend during standoff at Laurel Springs Drive apartment, leading to murder charges.

A Durham, North Carolina man has been arrested and charged with murder after his girlfriend was found dead inside a barricaded apartment, according to a press release from Durham Police Department.
Authorities say 31-year-old Christopher Brian Whitley barricaded himself inside an apartment in the 1100 block of Laurel Springs Drive for hours Wednesday before police made entry and discovered the body of 34-year-old Auriel Lowe.

Auriel Lowe, a 34-year-old Durham woman, was found dead inside her apartment after a standoff involving her boyfriend.

Durham Police said they received a 911 call around 12:32 p.m., prompting a heavy law enforcement presence to set up a perimeter as they attempted to make contact with Whitley. Eventually, Whitley surrendered.  Inside the apartment, officers found Lowe dead.

Police confirmed that Lowe and Whitley were in a relationship at the time of the incident, and Whitley was formally charged with murder. On Thursday, Whitley appeared before a Durham County judge and was held without bond.
