Durham Police said they received a 911 call around 12:32 p.m., prompting a heavy law enforcement presence to set up a perimeter as they attempted to make contact with Whitley. Eventually, Whitley surrendered. Inside the apartment, officers found Lowe dead.
Police confirmed that Lowe and Whitley were in a relationship at the time of the incident, and Whitley was formally charged with murder. On Thursday, Whitley appeared before a Durham County judge and was held without bond.
No further details have been released about what led to Lowe’s death or the hours-long standoff.
