Durham Man Killed on Way to Dialysis in Crash Involving Stolen Vehicle; Suspect Faces Murder Charge

A tragic crash on March 19, 2025, claimed the life of 53-year-old Jermaine Clement, a former GoDurham driver, who was en route to a dialysis appointment when his SUV was struck by a stolen vehicle in Durham, North Carolina.

Jermaine Clement, 53, was killed in a tragic crash while heading to dialysis in Durham, NC.

The fatal crash occurred at the intersection of Southwest Durham Drive and Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard around 10 a.m., when Clement’s 2021 Toyota Highlander was hit by a stolen 2020 Kia Soul. Authorities identified the driver of the stolen vehicle as 20-year-old Shyrone Evans, who now faces a slew of charges, including second-degree murder.

According to court records, Evans allegedly stole the Kia Soul from the Comfort Inn on the 3500 block of Mount Moriah Road. After the crash, he reportedly fled the scene and was later found hiding in another vehicle at a nearby car dealership.

Evans’ charges include:
– Second-degree murder
– Assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury
– Felony hit-and-run
– Felony fleeing to elude arrest
– Felony reckless driving
– Misdemeanor driving without a license

Shyrone Evans, 20, of Durham, NC, is facing second-degree murder and several felony charges after allegedly stealing a Kia Soul and causing a deadly crash that killed Jermaine Clement.

Evans is no stranger to law enforcement. He has 52 pending charges dating back to 2023, most related to vehicle thefts and break-ins. This recent court appearance was his 14th in just 18 months. Due to the severity of the charges and Evans‘ extensive criminal record, a judge denied bond, despite prosecutors requesting a $2 million bond.

Clement’s family, devastated by the loss, described the act as “senseless” and pleaded for justice. A statement read in court by the assistant district attorney conveyed their heartbreak, calling for the maximum penalty to be imposed on Evans.

“Jermaine didn’t deserve this,” the family stated. “He was fighting through health battles and still brought light to others’ lives.”

Clement, who had recently lost a leg due to medical complications, remained an uplifting and positive figure in his community.
