Durham man detained by ICE immigration appointment

Durham man detained by ICE during immigration interview sparks outrage in North Carolina.

What was supposed to be a routine immigration appointment in Durham turned into a nightmare for one local family.

On October 9, Mohamed Shama, an Egyptian-born man seeking legal residency through marriage, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during his interview — shocking his wife.

Maggie and Mohamed Shama’s immigration journey turned tragic when ICE detained Mohamed during his Durham appointment, shattering their hopes for legal residency.

According to WRAL, Shama originally entered the United States on a B-2 tourist visa and was supposed to leave by May 25, 2014. DHS now classifies him as a “visa overstay with a final order of removal.”

Despite that, he has no criminal record and was reportedly following the law by attending his appointment to adjust his status through marriage.

Shama’s wife, Maggie Shama, told reporters that she accompanied her husband to the immigration office for what they believed was the next step toward securing permanent residency.

NC Newsline confirmed that ICE agents arrested Shama inside the interview room, leaving his wife in shock and confusion.

The Department of Homeland Security later stated that Shama’s case involved a final removal order, but advocates argue ICE’s actions undermine faith in the immigration process.

  1. I know someone else that was done the same way. The people who are abiding by the rules are the ones being punished and deported. This administration is as cowardly as their president. They swore they were only deporting the trouble makers……LIARS.
