Cousins arrested after Ericka Lucas shooting in Wake Forest

56-year-old Ericka Lucas — a respected former Rolesville High School principal and wife of Wake Forest High School’s head football coach — was tragically killed following a shooting at a home on East Nelson Avenue.

Police say Lucas was not the intended target when gunfire rang out on August 29, 2025, but she became the unintended victim of a deadly incident that has left two young cousins facing first-degree murder charges. Lucas died about an week later, according to WRAL News.

ARRESTED: 18-YEAR-OLD & TEEN COUSIN CHARGED IN MURDER

Authorities confirmed the arrest of Dexter Lamont Mills, 18, and his 16-year-old cousin. Both are now facing first-degree murder charges. Mills made his first court appearance on Wednesday. He was also charged with possession of a stolen firearm and is being held without bond.

His 16-year-old cousin, whose name is being withheld due to his age, faces the same murder charge and has also been tied to the assault related to the shooting.

From 2012 to 2015, Ericka Lucas served as principal at Rolesville High School, later moving into an assistant principal role at Millbrook High from 2018 to 2020. She was among the few Black female high school principals in the Wake County system — and her presence left a permanent mark.

Ericka Lucas, a respected Black educator and former Rolesville High School principal, died after being shot in Wake Forest. Her legacy of service and love lives on.
